Who was Facundo Molares Schoenfeld, the militant who died in the Obelisk

Facundo Molares Schoenfeld He was a former member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and one of the few foreigners who earned the trust of the leadership to join.

As Comandante Camilo became known when the government of Juan Manuel Santos was planted: “Let’s hope that this is the first gesture until the release of all the detainees and all the prisoners of war that are in jails.” The activist for human rights, Piedad Córdoba, who participated in the negotiation, thanked him for the “gesture of peace” to release the councilor after 21 months in captivity.

Son of Trevelin Justice of the Peace, Néstor Hugo Molares, Facundo was born in 1975 in the Buenos Aires town of San Miguel, but, according to official records, he left for Colombia in 2002 following the Marxist-Leninist ideas adopted by the FARC. There he started at the bottom, sought followers for the cause in the universities and climbed many positions.

“Camilo” looked at the universities for people who, like him, wanted to embrace the model of Ernesto Guevara. His first approach to revolutionary ideas was in fact when he read a book about “Che”. He explained it that way in an interview with Colombian Resistance: “I was eleven years old when I read his biography and I said: ‘I want to be like him’”.

In my land we did an uprising in 2001 in which I was able to participate. In two months of popular fights, five presidents passed. We were an effervescent town: where a young man fell dead at the hands of the police, ten rose up to continue fighting. The stores of American companies, such as McDonald’s, were on fire, as a symbol of rebellion, ”he recalled at the time.

His own concerns and the influence of his father Hugo, who worked in a hospital in Ciudadela and was close to being kidnapped during the civic-military dictatorship for his role as a delegate of the Association of State Workers (ATE), encouraged him to turn to political militancy and joining the Communist Youth Federation.

Those were the last days of Facundo in Argentina and the first of “Camilo” in Colombia. “The problem with these spontaneous uprisings is the lack of an organization that can supplant the State. Those days I made a reflection that marked my decision to be in Colombia: with some FARC we could have taken power. We didn’t need more,” she said.

So, in the first days of 2002, Molares Schoenfeld traveled to Colombia: “It was impossible for me to wait another fifty years for a second chance.. As ‘Alexandra Nariño’ said, if the revolution happens, it happens in Colombia and then you have to be here”. Alexandra was another of the foreigners of the FARC.

In 2011, “Camilo” returned to the Colombian jungle, but eight months later that unit suffered a very strong blow: By order of the Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office, the Police arrested ten people -the rector of a school, a farmer and eight university students- from the Clandestine Communist Party (PC3). One of them was Leidy Paola Soto Tamayo, his girlfriend, accused of rebellion.

But the hardest setback he received was from his own comrades in arms when the FARC and the Government began a definitive ceasefire on September 4, 2012. The parts finally signed the “Peace Agreement” on September 26, 2016 in Cartagena with the Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel as international observer.

With the demobilization of the FARC, the Argentine sought other horizons. After disassociating himself from the armed insurgency, arrived in Bolivia at the beginning of 2018, where he worked as a photojournalist for a magazine until May 2019moment in which he returned to Argentina, after 17 years outside the country.

Once in national territory, he settled in the town of Trevelin, where he tried to rebuild his life until November 7, 2021. He was detained by the Federal Police on the basis of an Interpol order, based on an arrest request from the Colombian Judiciary.

He was accused of kidnapping of councilman Armando Acuña, which occurred in March 2009 in southwestern Colombia, and spent almost eight months in prison in Ezeiza Federal Penitentiary Unit No. 6 awaiting the verdict of the trial for his extradition to the coffee country.

On July 8, 2021, Molares’ lawyers were notified by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace of their rejection of the extradition request, which caused the federal judge of Esquel, Guido Otranto, to finally order his removal on July 29, 2022. release.

Currently, he was active in the Popular Rebellion Movement and wrote in the magazine of that space.
